Zwickau (dpa/sn) – CDU candidate Carsten Michaelis won first place in the district election in the Zwickau district. He got 30.7 percent of the votes on Sunday and was thus ahead of Dorothee Obst from the Free Voters (24.4 percent), as the district office informed about the preliminary result. AfD candidate Andreas Gerold had to settle for third place (21.1 percent). Since no candidate was able to secure more than 50 percent of the votes, a second round of voting on July 3rd is necessary.

Incumbent Christoph Scheurer (CDU) – Saxony’s longest-serving district administrator – is leaving office after 31 years. There were seven applicants for his successor. Michaelis has so far been the district councillor, Obst mayor of the city of Kirchberg.
