Berlin/Dresden (dpa/sn) – The alumnat of the Dresdner Kreuzchor receives federal funding for the conversion and modernization of the historic old building. As Saxon members of the Bundestag announced, on Thursday the Budget Committee of the Bundestag approved 2.295 million euros from the newly launched program “Investments in National Cultural Institutions in Germany” (KulturInvest). According to Paula Piechotta (Greens), member of the Bundestag in Leipzig, this year it will be endowed with a total of 40 million euros to support construction activities in the cultural sector.
Alumnat is a historical term for boarding school. The Dresdner Kreuzchor, founded over 800 years ago, belongs to the top league of boys’ choirs in Germany and is sponsored by the city. It consists of boys between the ages of 9 and 19, most of whom live in the alumnat. With its performances all over the world, the ensemble is the city’s ambassador, but is primarily responsible for the organization of Vespers and services in the Kreuzkirche. The musical repertoire ranges from early baroque to world premieres.
