Torgau (dpa / sn) – Almost two weeks after the discovery of human bones on the grounds of the correctional facility in Torgau (Northern Saxony district), investigators suspect further skeletal parts in the ground. According to current assessments, further mortal remains are to be expected, the public prosecutor’s office in Leipzig said at the request of the German Press Agency. Accordingly, the number of skeletons and skeletal parts cannot yet be estimated. The salvage work was temporarily interrupted, also to check whether the search could be supported by technical aids.
The bones of several people were discovered during construction work at the end of June. The site is said to be on the north wall. Based on the findings so far, it is assumed that the bones found so far are the remains of a number of people in the lower double-digit range. However, the number could still change.
In order to determine the age of the skeletal parts and to clarify the alleged circumstances of death, the public prosecutor’s office commissioned the forensic examination of the bones. A result can only be expected in a few weeks or months. The first assessment that the bones come from the first half of the 20th century has not changed so far.
