The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has posted a thread on its Twitter account in which it warns of the serious drought problem that Spain is suffering. And it is that the month of February, March and so far in April the accumulated rains barely reach 50% of the average and in some areas of the east and the southern half of the peninsula it has barely rained 25% of what is usual .
If the data for the hydrological year (which begins on October 1) are analyzed, the conclusion drawn by Aemet is that the rainfall is 23% below normal.
Although the months of December and January were rainy, the rest of the period has not been and between April 1 and 17 “not a single drop has fallen in more than half of the country,” says Aemet. So far this month in the country as a whole, 5 liters per square meter have been registered, which barely represents 15% of the usual average in these first days of April.
Although the arrival of a front is expected in the coming days that will leave rain on Saturday in a large part of the peninsula, the Aemet stresses that the rains “will not be particularly abundant” and stable weather will return immediately. Thus “it is increasingly likely that April 2023 will be one of the driest in the historical series, if not the most”.
In addition, Aemet emphasizes that an episode of “unusual” high temperatures for this time of year may occur next week, in which temperatures could exceed 35ºC in some parts of the southern half.
