The minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, has presented the shock plan to address the crisis of Thomas Cook, which will be adopted next October 11, in the Council of Ministers. There are thirteen measures that are valued, in principle, at approximately 300 million euros and that will be entirely in the Canary islands and the Balearic islands, which are the communities most affected. Both regions have lost about 400,000 and 300,000 tourists, respectively, that had their tickets already purchased, and that “we are not going to come”, shape Maroto.
Two-thirds of the budget for this plan of shock will be intended for open a line of credit to give financial support to the enterprises affected by the bankruptcy of the british tour operator. It is estimated that there are about 1,000 companies affected by the cessation of activity of the british tour operator, of which 600 are in hotels, according to specific Cepyme. Maroto has not detailed the type of credit or what institution will be the one to back them up.
Another measure of support to the companies will extended to five months, the bonus of Social Security to the contract fixed discontinuous. Also taking other initiatives to inform companies who have to delay payment to the Social Security and other taxes.
In terms of connectivity, one of the biggest concerns of the Canary islands, now starts its high season, Maroto advanced that it will be three measures. The first, which applies immediately, is that there will be an incentive on the commercial rates of AENA companies. In particular, will be waived at 100% the additional seats that the airlines added international flights until the end of the winter season, which ends next march 28. Thus, the 168,000 of the seats announced by the airline Jet2 to connect the Canary islands and the United Kingdom will benefit from this measure. Maroto estimates that the cost for the airlines is reduced by 38%. However, it has not been referred to the reduction of the airport charges which the representatives of the affected regions and the entrepreneurs of the sector, demanded the manager airport.
For its part, Enaire reduced rates route on a 12% from the 1 of January to try to attract new carriers. In that sense, the minister said they are in talks with more airlines and tour operators to fill the vacancies Thomas Cook.
The third leg of the plan aims to preserve the employment, which affects some 3,400 people in the Balearic islands. For this reason, a study will be conducted between the regions and the SEPE to reposition all of the people affected.
The last part of the plan aims to promote the tourism offer in Spain. In addition, there will be a legal strategy to defend the rights of those affected, and to require Thomas Cook responsibilities.
