Erfurt (dpa/th) – 21 Thuringian municipalities can plan more than 400,000 euros for better nature and insect protection. They prevailed in the Thuringian Ministry of the Environment’s “More nature in village and city” competition, as the ministry announced on Monday in Erfurt. According to the ministry, numerous villages and towns want to bring active insect protection to their areas.
For this purpose, for example, lawns are to be converted into flowering meadows, insect-friendly trees and shrubs are to be planted or fire-fighting ponds are to be redesigned for water-dwelling insects. In addition, municipal green spaces are to be maintained differently. Everything serves the goal of stopping insect deaths on the doorstep.
The installation of dead wood, dry stone walls and insect nesting aids were mentioned as further examples, which are intended to ensure that insects find suitable breeding sites. Early bloomers, herbs, perennials and native shrubs and fruit trees should provide insects with food from spring to autumn.
