Erfurt (dpa/th) – The planned design of a memorial for the victims of the right-wing extremist terrorist group “National Socialist Underground” (NSU) is to be presented to the public in Erfurt today. The winning design emerged from a competition with 15 submitted works, as announced by the Thuringian State Chancellery. The Thuringian state parliament decided to set up a memorial in 2017, it should be built on a square not far from the parliament.

The NSU terrorists Beate Zschäpe, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt murdered Germany between 1999 and 2007. The NSU murdered ten people, carried out bomb attacks and committed robberies. The trio grew up in Thuringia and became radicalized in Jena in the 1990s. Zschäpe, Mundlos and Böhnhardt went into hiding in Saxony.
