Weimar (dpa/th) – The Goethe and Schiller archive of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar is showing the exhibition “Courage to Chaos – Ottilie von Goethe” from Friday. According to the foundation on Wednesday, the focus of the show is on Ottilie von Goethe’s work as a translator and as editor of the multilingual journal “Chaos”, which she founded. Her role as an important agent of Anglo-German cultural transfer is also highlighted.
Handwritten and printed poems, literary texts as well as translations and reviews can be seen as evidence of the time. According to the information, objects from the estate are being presented for the first time, which document Goethe’s self-commitment to preserving Goethe’s legacy and allow a reconstruction of her private library and her art collections.
According to the information, the eventful life and personality of Ottilie von Goethe were often the subject of novellas, novels and novel biographies. The focus was on her role as the daughter-in-law of the famous poet prince Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, her unhappy marriage and her passionate feelings. The show in the Goethe and Schiller archives, on the other hand, focuses on her intellectual life’s work, which has so far received little attention.
