Erfurt (dpa/th) – Gas is still the main energy source for heating residential buildings in Thuringia. As the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday in Erfurt, according to the latest available figures in 2018, 51 percent of all apartments were heated with gas. In concrete numbers, these were 519,000 households. According to this information, district heating was the main energy source for heating in 223,000 apartments or 21.9 percent.
According to the statisticians, 174,000 apartments were heated with heating oil. According to the information, this was 17.1 percent of households. Electricity was only used for heating in 26,000 apartments, which means a share of 2.6 percent.
Gas was also the primary heating energy used in the apartments newly built between 2016 and 2020. Across Germany, this applied to 44.9 percent of the apartments. In Thuringia, gas in Eichsfeld had the largest share of the heating types with 68.4 percent, in Eisenach the share was 65.8 percent. Geothermal energy was used the most in Suhl (16.2 percent), while district heating was used extensively in Jena with a share of 15.7 percent. Thuringia-wide, the Saale-Orla-Holz district had the highest share at 12.6 percent.
