Hohenstein (dpa/th) – Due to a pungent smell from a septic tank, an elementary school in Hohenstein (Nordhausen district) has been evacuated. According to initial findings, there is no danger to the approximately 40 students who were in the building on Thursday morning, said a police spokesman. Nobody was injured.

Hazardous materials discharged into the septic tank near the school caused the odor, according to police. It will be determined where the substances came from, what kind of substances are involved and whether they were introduced into the pit intentionally or negligently. The pit has multiple enemas, the spokesman said. The pumping of the substances was prepared on Thursday.
