Erfurt (dpa/th) – More than 18,000 people took part in demonstrations in Thuringia against high energy costs, inflation and the war in Ukraine. A police spokesman announced on Tuesday that a total of 18,100 participants were counted in the lifts and rallies on Monday in the country. Around 2,200 people gathered in Gera alone. This was the largest of the demonstrations in Thuringia.

According to the police, an unregistered meeting with a total of 480 participants took place in the city center of Erfurt. “The individual intermediate rallies and banners that were carried with them addressed the current political situation, the well-known corona policy as well as the Ukraine/Russia conflict and the current energy crisis,” said the police. There were no relevant incidents.

In the area of ??the Jena State Police Inspectorate, a total of around 1770 participants were counted at five meetings in the cities of Jena and Weimar as well as in the Weimarer Land district and the Saale-Holzland district. According to the police, around 300 people moved through the city area at a gathering in Kahla that was not reported, which caused temporary traffic disruptions on federal highway 88. The protests were directed, among other things, against the corona measures, against the war in Ukraine, the energy shortage and rising inflation.

Meetings were also registered in Meiningen, Saalfeld, Neustadt-Orla, Gotha, Altenburg, Schmölln, Sonneberg and Ilmenau. Between 100 and 800 participants had been registered in advance.
