Erfurt (dpa/th) – The Thuringian long-distance water supply has warned against entering frozen dams. The ice is unsustainable, it said in a statement on Wednesday. Some of the 120 dams in Thuringia are already covered with a light layer of ice. Although the ice layer seems closed, cavities could form due to sinking water – this leads to cracks and fractures in the ice layer. Pedestrians could break in. The ice surfaces are also not suitable for ice skating, it said.
The Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation also warned against entering the frozen lake in the Wilhelmsthal Palace Park near Eisenach. The layer of ice is not resilient, people could break in, it said. Since the water in the Wilhelmsthaler See dam is always in motion, no solid surface of ice can form.
