Weimar (dpa/th) – Weimar is looking for a new onion market queen. The future sovereign should be ambassador for the 369th Onion Market from October 7th to 9th in Weimar, the city announced on Friday. The selection is made through a casting. Applicants are invited to do this two weeks before the market, which takes place on the second weekend in October. The jury is made up of the outgoing queen as well as representatives from culture, administration, city marketing and the hospitality industry.

Applicants for the crown of the incumbent Queen Katharina Streichardt must come from Weimar, from the Weimarer Land district or from the onion farming town of Helderungen, as the city further informed. The women should also be at least 18 years old and “have a close connection to Weimar through birth or place of residence, through their place of training or study or through their place of work”. Time also plays an important role in the application: the future office holder must be able to represent the city in both 2022 and 2023 as Onion Market Queen.

The Weimar Onion Market is the oldest folk festival in Thuringia. Traditionally, on the second weekend in October, there are three days of celebrations with up to 350,000 visitors.
