Almost four months before the European elections, the current President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Monday February 19 that she is a candidate to keep her position at the head of the European executive.
“I am making a conscious and considered decision today: I would like to run for a second term,” the German official said at a press conference after receiving the support of the CDU, the German conservative party from which she is a member. The former German defense minister has held this position since the last European election in 2019.
