Uranium is an extremely dense metal that does not deform when it comes into contact with its target. It is thus used in armor-piercing shells and bombs to make them more penetrating. The United Kingdom had already announced several months ago its intention to deliver munitions containing depleted uranium to Ukraine, an initiative denounced by Moscow.
This announcement comes as the Ukrainian armed forces are leading a counter-offensive against the Russians. US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken, visiting Kiev, said the latter was making “very encouraging” progress.
Later on Wednesday, the US Secretary of State revealed his country’s new aid to Ukraine for “more than a billion dollars” to deal with the Russian invasion. “The United States is committed to empowering Ukraine to write its own future… Today we are announcing new aid totaling over $1 billion,” he said. “Progress on the ongoing counteroffensive has accelerated in recent weeks and this new aid will help give it new momentum,” he said.
