WOODBURY — A Gloucester County jury convicted a Williamstown man of murder Thursday for stabbing another man in 2013, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The stabbing was the result of a fight between Asa T. Jones, 35, and Tony Miles, 41, both of Williamstown, on Nov. 17, 2013, on Library Street in Monroe Township. Jones used a kitchen knife to stab Miles three times — with a stab into a major blood vessel in Miles’ leg proving fatal.

Sentencing for Jones is scheduled for March 21 in Gloucester County Superior Court.

Asa Jones, 32, is charged with murder and related crimes in connection with the death of 41-year-old Tony Miles on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013.TBA

The jury convicted Jones Thursday of first-degree murder, weapons offenses and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Jones previously served time in prison for assault, sexual assault and robbery. He was out of prison for four months for an aggravated assault conviction when the stabbing occurred in Williamstown.

Evidence used during the trial included witnesses who saw the fight between the two men, video surveillance and forensic evidence recovered from a knife at Jones’ apartment.

On Nov. 17, 2013, the two men got into a fist fight. Afterward, Jones went to his apartment to get a kitchen knife to kill Miles. Authorities transported Miles to Kennedy Hospital in Washington Township, where they pronounced him dead around 11 p.m.
The prosecutor’s office argued during the trial that Jones had enough time to “cool off” before returning to the street. This argument led to the murder conviction instead of passion-provoked manslaughter, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.
