The European Union has secured hundreds of millions of doses of a possible vaccine against the Coronavirus. The EU Commission concluded, according to its own information of a first corresponding framework agreement with the pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca, the authority announced on Friday in Brussels. It involves the purchase of 300 million doses with the Option for a further 100 million.
The vaccine could be both the EU States and other European countries, as well as less prosperous countries elsewhere in the world, it said. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke of the “first pillar” of a European vaccine strategy. “This strategy will enable us to provide Europeans, as well as our partners elsewhere in the world, with future vaccines.”

Additional agreements with other manufacturers,

A spokeswoman for the EU Commission said on Friday, the current agreement covers all 27 EU States. Whether the EU agreement replaced the contract, the vaccine Alliance, remained unclear.
