BYD recently unveiled its latest addition to its fleet, the BYD Hefei, a 7,000-vehicle car carrier built by Guangzhou Shipyard. The vessel, equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system of natural gas (LNG) and fuel oil, is set to meet the loading requirements for both fuel and electric vehicles.
The BYD Hefei marks the beginning of a partnership between BYD and Guangzhou Shipyard, with plans for a second car carrier already in the works. This new vessel, with a length of 199.9 meters, a beam of 38 meters, and a design speed of 18.5 knots, is named after the city where one of BYD’s factories is located.
This is not the first car carrier for BYD, as the company previously announced the completion of loading vehicles onto its first carrier, BYD Explorer No. 1, which set sail earlier this year. However, BYD Explorer No. 1 is not owned by BYD but was built by CIMC Raffles for international shipping company Zodiac Maritime.
BYD’s expansion into global markets has been successful, with the company selling over 2 million NEVs in the first eight months of the year. Overseas sales have also seen significant growth, with a 125.46 percent increase year-on-year.
Looking ahead, BYD aims to reach a significant milestone in 2026, with full-year deliveries expected to reach 6 million units. This growth trajectory includes plans for about 1.5 million units to be sold in overseas markets, showcasing BYD’s ambitions for global expansion in the coming years.
