According to INSEE, the general level of consumer prices in the Paris region was in 2022 7% higher than that of the rest of metropolitan France (excluding Corsica), a difference to be compared with that of remuneration: the net hourly wage average of an employee is 9% higher in Île-de-France than in the provinces and that of a manager is 28%.
Expenditure relating to housing (rent, water, maintenance, gas, electricity and other fuels), which represents 15% of the household budget in the provinces and 18% of the household budget in the Paris region, is the item for which the price differences are the most marked. Prices in the Paris region are thus 21% higher than in the provinces, the difference being concentrated on rents, which are 40% higher than those in the province with comparable housing characteristics.
With regard to food products and non-alcoholic beverages, which represent on average 15% of the French household budget, their prices were in 2022 7% higher in the Paris region than in the provinces. The prices of clothing are, on average, 6% higher in the Paris region, this difference even reaching 12.6% for shoes.
Restaurant and hotel prices are 7% higher in Île-de-France than in the provinces. The price difference is more moderate (5%) for leisure and cultural expenses and is even only 1% for furniture, household items and routine household maintenance.
Finally, INSEE notes that the general level of consumer prices (excluding rents) is generally 7.5% higher in Corsica than in the rest of the province. Food and non-alcoholic beverages is the item with the largest price gap: 14%.
