The song was a response to songs by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, who in titles such as Sourn Man and Alabama discussed racial segregation and slavery in sourn states. Lynyrd Skynyrd felt Young’s portrayal as one-sided and wanted to highlight positive sides of sourn states with Sweet Home Alabama.
