A man attacked a police dog with a knife in Hamburg and seriously injured it with several stabs. “Haix” was taken to a veterinary clinic after the incident during an operation in an apartment in Hamburg-Lohbrügge and was operated on there immediately, the police said. The dog is out of danger.

The police were called to the apartment early on Saturday morning because the 38-year-old man is said to have threatened his mother after an argument. The mother was able to escape into the open and informed the officials. The man holed himself up in the apartment.

Multiple attempts by the police to contact him failed. The officials then opened the apartment – first “Haix”. Right at the entrance, the man attacked the dog with a knife. The officers called for help from the State Criminal Police Office, who then used a taser to overpower the attacker, who was said to be armed with a large knife.

The 38-year-old was taken to hospital for injuries to his feet. A doctor on duty also assessed the man psychiatrically and ordered his placement in a psychiatric ward.
