Operación Triunfo will return with a new edition that will leave conventional television behind and make the leap to streaming. The mythical musical ‘talent show’ can be seen on Amazon Prime Video, which has bought its rights, as announced exclusively by Vertele on Wednesday, April 19.
It will be the 12th season of the program and it is scheduled to start at the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024. With it, a fourth stage in its history will begin, after its debut on La 1 in 2001, its move to Telecinco and its return to the public chain in 2017.
TVE chose not to renew the format after its last edition, broadcast in 2020 and marked by an interruption due to the pandemic. Tinet Rubira, director of the Gestmusic production company, had already spoken at that time about the possible continuity of the program “without the need to have linear television.”
The aforementioned medium states that Netflix and Movistar showed interest in Operación Triunfo, but the platform that has won the contest is Amazon Prime Video, which “finalizes an agreement that is expected to be signed in the coming days.”
The new edition of OT will once again have a 24-hour Channel, in which viewers will be able to see what the contestants are doing in the most famous Academy on television. There will also be weekly galas that can be followed live through Amazon Prime Video.
Therefore, the company will not only offer its recorded and pre-recorded content, but will also bet on respecting the characteristics of the original format. In this way, Operación Triunfo will be the first Spanish ‘talent show’ that can be seen live on a streaming platform.
In addition, Vertele is considering the possibility that the return of OT can also be followed through a Twitch channel. It should be noted that the popular direct platform that many ‘streamers’ use for their content is owned by Amazon.
