The European Union (EU) has decided to deliver the amount of the award of Princess of Asturias of the Concord, endowed with 50,000 euros, to victims of the fires in Spain and Portugal, a decision is “symbolic” to show “closeness” with the affected communities.
According to the president of the European Parliament (EP), Antonio Tajani, during the opening of the plenary session in Strasbourg, the decision was taken jointly with the presidents of the European Commission (EC), Jean-Claude Juncker, and the European Council, Donald Tusk.
“it Is a decision symbolic with the that we want to show our closeness to the communities and the victims of the fires in Spain and Portugal,” said Tajani to meps.
The plenary observed a minute of silence for the victims of these fires, that only this month have caused 44 deaths in Portugal and 4 in Galicia, as well as tens of wounded.
“The phenomenon is troubling, and deserves all of our attention. Only this year in Europe have been burned to 750,000 hectares and more than 100 people have lost their lives,” added the Italian political.
Tajani underlined “the necessity and urgency of instituting a body of civil protection european and simplify the regulatory context to allow the populations to get an immediate help in case of need”.
Precisely, this Wednesday, in the plenary meps discussed with the Council and the Commission on how to improve and speed up the emergency response of the EU, in addition to the financing tools to assist Spain and Portugal after the last fire.
The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, announced last Thursday during the european Summit that the EU will activate “all” of the instruments of “solidarity” by the fires in Spain and Portugal, after discussing the tragedy with the european leaders.
Juncker has asked the european commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Christos Stylianides, to present a month a comprehensive proposal to improve the civil protection mechanism of the EU and make it more effective.
