The grain agreement brokered by the UN and Turkey between the warring parties Russia and Ukraine threatened to expire – it is now being extended. UN Secretary-General Guterres is satisfied after a long struggle.
The grain deal between Russia and Ukraine has been extended by 120 days. This was announced by Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleskandr Kubrakov on Twitter on Thursday. A Turkish government representative confirmed in Istanbul that the agreement would continue for four months “under the current conditions”. After the winter there could be “new agreements”. UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the extension of the agreement.
The agreement brokered by the UN and Turkey would have expired on Saturday night. It was signed in Istanbul on July 22 to allow for the safe export of Ukrainian grain through a Black Sea protective corridor and the export of Russian food and fertilizers despite the war.
Ukraine is one of the largest grain producers in the world. However, because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Kiev’s grain exports are severely affected.
