Government spokesperson Olivier Véran on Wednesday denounced the “historic error” of having left the care professions in the broad sense “insufficiently valued” for “40, 50 years”, leading today to a “lack of personnel” which explains abuse, such as in nurseries according to a report published on Tuesday.
“We pay for 40 years, 50 years […] during which these professions were professions, it must be said, which were almost exclusively feminized and therefore insufficiently valued. It was a historic mistake, “said the minister on the set of France 2, recalling Emmanuel Macron’s campaign promise to create “200,000 additional solutions” for the reception of toddlers. In a report submitted to the government on Tuesday, the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs (Igas) affirms that young children can be exposed to the risk of neglect, even abuse, in nurseries, describing a “very disparate” situation.
In addition to strengthening controls and raising the rate of supervision, the Igas rapporteurs recall the need to remedy the lack of attractiveness of early childhood professions, which leads to chronic understaffing and therefore burnout of professionals. in office. This is an “aggravating factor as much as [a] symptom” of the difficulties in welcoming children, according to them.
“In all the care professions, we see the same thing: a loss of attractiveness of professions, sometimes a loss of meaning, and therefore a lack of staff”, acknowledged Olivier Véran. This lack of staff creates “the conditions so that good treatment is not always there”.
Referring to “the major project of this start of the five-year term”, he assured that the Minister of Solidarity, Jean-Christophe Combe, who is to announce measures during the spring, “is working hard for the attractiveness of the professions , for the training of professionals, to open up new places, on governance with communities and also on controls”.
