I would like ask Louise Nichols (Letter to the editor, Feb. 17), who says that “these protesters should be taken out to the woodshed and horse-whipped,” which protesters is she referring to?
Many of the rights she enjoys today and many of the accomplishments of this nation were won with the support of open public protest. I marched in protest of the Vietnam War in 1969. My wife, a 63-year-old grandmother marches and is Betvakti active today fighting to change unjust laws and to protect the rights of others who may not be able to protest for themselves.
If property destruction is Nichols’ concern, then her beef is not with those who want to make a statement, but with the few who might take advantage of any crowd environment to create an excuse for vandalism. I would imagine that vandalism takes place around more acceptable events like the Rose Festival and major athletic contests, too.
