The plans of America’s President, Donald Trump for a deduction of nearly 10,000 soldiers from Germany will encounter criticism of his own Republican party in Congress. The leading Republican on the foreign Affairs Committee of the house of representatives, Michael McCaul, and five of his Republican colleagues on the Board asked Trump in a Tuesday (local time) published a letter to reconsider the decision. A withdrawal of soldiers from Germany, would jeopardize “the National security of the United States,” he warned.
Trump announced on Monday of last week that the number of American soldiers should be reduced in Germany to 25,000. Currently over 34,500 soldiers are stationed in Germany. With a partial deduction Trump Germany wants to punish for, in his view, continue to be low defence expenditure. He also criticizes the fact that Germany and Russia “billions of dollars” to pay for energy, but at the same time of America protect wanted.
The Two-percent target of the Nato States that all allies are closer to 2024 is the target, at least two percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) for defense spending. Germany has increased expenditure significantly in the past years, but in 2019, however, only when a proportion of GDP by 1.38 percent.
“American interests at risk”
In the Letter, the members stated, you support trump’s efforts to achieve a fair burden-sharing within Nato. We also recognize that Germany’s expenditures were too low. “We fear, however, that this partial withdrawal from Germany of Berlin will not convince to spend more, and at the same time, the strategic interests of the United States at risk.”
