Matt Szczur hit a two-run single to highlight a three-run second inning Saturday as the Cubs beat the Athletics 4-3 in a split-squad spring training game at Sloan Park. Javier Baez went 2-for-3 with a double, but the Giants scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth to beat the Cubs 8-6 at Scottsdale Stadium.
At the plate: Against the A’s, Jason Heyward, displaying a new batting stance, showed his aggressiveness by flying to center on the first pitch he saw from Jesse Hahn, and then hit an RBI grounder to second to score Szczur in the second.
On the mound: Left-hander Mike Montgomery, trying to make the conversion from reliever to starter, walked two and frequently missed high in his spring debut against the A’s.
In the field: The Cubs worked on double plays during Friday’s workout, and they looked sharp Saturday as Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist combined to turn a smooth double play on a Adam Rosales grounder to end the second against the A’s.
Key number: 3-for-15 — Cubs’ mark with runners in scoring position against the Giants.
Up next: Vs. Indians, 2:05 p.m. Saturday at Sloan Park; RH Jake Buchanan vs. RH Danny Salazar.
