But it didn’t matter as BYU managed to win a 34-20 victory against the Aggies at Maverik stadium.
These are the three main takeaways for BYU from the game, which saw them improve to 5-0 for the season.
Tyler Allgeier is the Cougars’ spokesperson
Utah State allowed opponents to run for 200 yards each game going into Friday night. It was therefore expected that Tyler Allgeier, BYU’s running back, could have a huge night.
Allgeier delivered more than expected. The Cougars’ star runningback had 218 yards rushing on 22 carries, and three touchdowns. BYU led 14 points with a 1 yard score in the fourth quarter.
Allgeier was there time and again to help the BYU offense. It was lacking two starting linemen: its starting quarterback and its starting fullback. He then became its backup quarterback. After scoring the game’s first touchdown, he ran for 22 yards less than four minutes. He then added a 59 yard scoring run in quarter two to put BYU 24-10.
He delivered yet again as the Cougars tried to keep the game alive in the fourth quarter. After Utah State had cut their lead to 27-20, Allgeier ran 67 yards. It was initially ruled a touchdown but a review revealed that he was at the 1-yard line. He scored two plays later.
Allgeier helped to run down the clock when USU had to punt.
Cougars are forced to shuffle their QBs because of injuries
Jaren Hall was injured and missed his second consecutive game. Baylor Romney has the opportunity to play again for the Cougars.
Romney performed well. He completed 15 of 19 passes for the 187 yard and touchdown. The problem was that Romney did not play in the second period after he fell on the turf in the last half.

BYU gave the offense to Jacob Conover, a freshman who made his college debut for the second half. Conover was a struggle at the beginning, as BYU punted on three of his first possessions and he managed just 6 yards in 10 plays.
Conover completed 5 of 9 passes for 45 yards. However, he did make a few nice throws during a field goal scoring drive that placed BYU in front 27-13. Conover did not flash much but he didn’t have to. Conover also didn’t make any major mistakes that could have cost the Cougars who didn’t have a turnover.
