Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Baden-Württemberg’s Health Minister Manne Lucha believes that, given the sharp increase in new corona infections, it is possible that masks will soon be compulsory indoors again. “It can happen quickly under certain circumstances,” said Lucha on Thursday of the German Press Agency in Stuttgart. “The situation in the hospitals is tense, but still manageable.” If the experts came to the conclusion that countermeasures had to be taken, the country would be prepared. “We may say relatively quickly that wearing masks indoors will become mandatory.”

It’s about keeping the health system working. Some smaller hospitals are already able to transfer patients to larger clinics. “At the moment, however, the situation can still be managed,” said the Green politician. He appealed to people in the southwest to get vaccinated – including against the flu. This relieves the tense health care system in Baden-Württemberg.

The number of corona infections in the country has recently increased significantly. While the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants was 400 within seven days a week ago, the value is now around twice as high. Because not every infected person does a PCR test, experts also assume that the number of unreported cases is high.
