Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – The puppet theater in Magdeburg is to be developed into a center for European puppetry art. The plan is to establish two transnational master’s courses in the areas of “directing for puppet theater” and “figure design”, as the puppet theater and the city announced on Tuesday. They are to be offered in cooperation with the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin and the Stuttgart Academy of Music and Performing Arts. An artistic-practical part of the study is planned at the Puppentheater Magdeburg.

The extension to the European Center for Puppetry will enable research, residency programs and create a “PuppeLab”, an experimental space for digital formats.

The Puppentheater Magdeburg is one of the largest and most popular ensemble puppet theaters. It is municipally borne. Last but not least, the house is very well networked and recognized through its international puppet theater festival “Blickwechsel”. For around ten years, the puppet theater has also housed a collection of puppet plays that shows the development of the genre. Visitors can see more than 1200 dolls, figures, objects and materials.
