Malchin/Malchow (dpa/mv) – Thefts of cars with a so-called keyless go system are increasing in the Mecklenburg Lake District. As a police spokeswoman said on Monday, such a car worth around 28,000 euros was reported as stolen in Malchin on Sunday. It had disappeared from a parking lot during the night. Just a few days ago, strangers had stolen two such cars with a keyless entry system from the same manufacturer in Malchow and Remplin near Malchin on federal highway 104.

The total damage was given as almost 75,000 euros. The search for the vehicles is still ongoing. The police pointed out that car owners with such “keyless systems” should put their contactless car openers in shielding protective cases and not keep them near the front door. Otherwise, thieves could use a laptop to “hack” the connection to the car relatively easily, open the vehicles, start them and then disappear.

In the east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there had already been a large series of such car thefts with damage of 700,000 euros at the beginning of 2021. The police suspect organized crime behind it.
