For Prime Minister Kretschmann it is customary: Frog tripe on Shrove Tuesday. Beef offal is served in Riedlingen. Shortly before the end of the “fifth season”, the fools step on the gas again across the country.
Riedlingen/Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) – After a virtual meeting in 2021 and a cancellation last year, Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) starts his Shrove Tuesday (8.45 a.m.) again with a special breakfast. Traditionally, in Riedlingen he is served a plate of frog tripe. Not really frog innards are served. However, the dish is not for vegetarians: it is a mixture of beef offal that is refined with spices.
Kretschmann is an annual regular guest at the tripe feast organized by the Gole fools’ guild in Riedlingen in Upper Swabia (Biberach district). Last year, however, he had canceled his participation “in view of the world situation”. He had taken part in the corona-related virtual meeting in 2021.
Women have to stay outside at the traditional feast. They lock the doors so that the gentlemen have to leave the town hall from the first floor down a slide – of course to the cheers of numerous spectators who are waiting for them in front of the building. According to legend, the name Froschkutteln comes from the fact that Riedlingen sees itself as a stork town and frogs are one of the storks’ favorite foods.
In other parts of the country, too, the fools want to celebrate carnival one last time – before it’s all over on Ash Wednesday. In Stuttgart, Deputy Prime Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) receives around 400 carnivalists in the New Castle. The move traditionally takes place in Karlsruhe.
