Radebeul (dpa/sn) – Around 500 bakeries in Saxony are again collecting change from the Stollen purchase for a good cause in Advent. Customers are asked until Christmas to drop it in one of more than 1,300 donation boxes placed on the counter for those in need. “I hope that many small contributions will again collect a large income,” said the head of the Diakonie Sachsen, Dietrich Bauer, at the start of the annual campaign on Friday in Radebeul. “At a time when many crises are piling up, support for people in the Global South is particularly urgent.”
The donations always flow into projects of the aid campaign “Bread for the World” of the Protestant Church. The focus of the 64th edition under the motto “One World. One Climate. One Future” is climate justice and the people in the countries of the Global South who are particularly threatened by climate change, who are already suffering massive consequences such as floods, storms or droughts suffer and can hardly protect themselves.
“Bread for the World” was founded in 1959. The aid organization of the Protestant state and free churches promotes projects worldwide together with its partner organizations. According to the Diakonie, a good 34,000 euros were collected in Saxony last Advent – in 2020 a record was reached with over 38,000.
