Mauer (dpa/lsw) – In dense fog, a driver in Mauer (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis) drove past a road in his car and mistakenly turned onto a railway track. With consequences: The car got stuck in the track bed, an approaching regional train could not brake and collided with the 28-year-old’s car on Thursday in the early commuter traffic at the level crossing. The unlucky driver was able to leave his car in time after further unsuccessful driving attempts and was uninjured.

According to SWEG Bahn Stuttgart, there were around 100 people on the train coming from Heidelberg towards Sinsheim. They were cared for by the volunteer fire department. The car was totaled. The train had to be taken away. Debris flew many feet, damaging trackside facilities, signs and a bicycle shelter.
