Garmisch-Partenkirchen (dpa/lby) – Three ski tourers were hit by an avalanche in the Zugspitze area and some of them were buried. The three 20-year-olds from the Weilheim area were climbing on Tuesday when a slab avalanche broke loose, as the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service announced on Wednesday. Two of the tourers were carried away about 100 meters and buried.
After one of the two victims was able to free himself, he and his comrade searched for the third ski tourer. This was about 1.5 meters deep and could only be freed unconscious from the snow masses after about ten minutes. Shortly before the mountain rescuers who had been called rushed to help with a helicopter, the 20-year-old regained consciousness. He was taken to a hospital with hypothermia.
