Munich (dpa / lby) – According to a new study, every tenth Bavarian has already become a victim of hate and hate speech on the Internet. “The numbers are frightening,” said the Bavarian Minister of Social Affairs Ulrike Scharf (CSU), whose ministry commissioned the survey, on Friday. “Our survey revealed what’s slumbering underground.” The media group “Münchner Merkur/tz” had previously reported about it.

According to the survey results, younger people have more experience with online hate. One in five people under 40 has been a victim of it – mostly because of their appearance, their political stance, religion, world view or nationality.

More than half (56 percent) of those who said they were affected by so-called “hate speech” were insulted or slandered. 11 percent of those affected even stated that they had received death threats.

Another big topic: sexual harassment online. According to the study, women are almost four times more likely to be sexually harassed online than men (22 percent of those affected versus 6 percent).
