Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – Several thousand climate protectionists demonstrated in downtown Frankfurt on Friday for changes in transport policy. The climate protection movement Fridays for Future had called for the campaign. The organizers spoke of around 5000 participants. The police were initially unable to give any numbers. On self-painted posters, the predominantly young demonstrators called for changes in politics and more action against climate change.
The demonstrators moved to the city center in several marching columns from different parts of Frankfurt. At their rally, they received support from participants in the public transport warning strikes called for by the ver.di trade union on Friday. In Frankfurt, neither trams nor subways ran, while in Wiesbaden, for example, the bus drivers joined the warning strike.
The demonstrators showed their solidarity with the union’s demands for better pay for public transport workers and called for an expansion of local public transport. Railways would have to run on renewable energies, it was also said.
