On Sunday, five candidates were elected to the first round in legislative elections. Four of them were for Nupes while the other was for the presidential majority Together! The outgoing Insoumis de Seine-Saint-Denis candidate Alexis Corbiere (7th District) and Daniele Obono (17th District) were elected. Also, two new LFI deputies, Sophia Chikirou (6th), and Sarah Legrain (16th) were elected. Ex-UDI Yannick Favennec Becot had the same success and was re-elected in Mayenne for a fifth term (57.13%).
Even more are they likely to have received more than 50% of votes and not be able to avoid a second round. To be elected in the first round it was necessary that the majority of registered voters voted for the candidate while obtaining 25% of those who were not registered. It was a difficult task, now that abstention has reached new heights.
This scenario is frustrating for nine candidates, even if they can see the second round with confidence. These are Nupes candidates – which include the close guard of JeanLuc Melenchon – and the ex-President of RN Marine Le Pen. Communist Stephane Peu was the luckiest candidate, winning nearly 63% of votes in Seine-Saint-Denis’ first round. However, only 20.1% registered voters voted in this constituency, where less than one third of voters voted.
