Sellin (dpa/mv) – The communities of Baabe, Göhren, Mönchgut and Sellin on Rügen have been recognized together as a tourist region. The rating of the community merger is unique nationwide, said Minister of Tourism Reinhard Meyer on Tuesday in Sellin. Minister-President Manuela Schwesig praised the cooperation between the municipalities, which have set up ship transport financed by the visitor’s tax.

The communities also offer free bus and train travel to cardholders. With the recognition as a tourist region, they can levy a uniform tourist tax. So far, this has been done separately and at different levels. According to the mayor of Sellin, Reinhard Liedtke, the cooperation is to be expanded. He and his counterparts received the relevant documents on Tuesday after the government’s external meeting.

According to the state government, the guests of the four Baltic Sea resorts of Sellin, Baabe, Göhren and Mönchgut in the southeast of Rügen accounted for more than three million overnight stays in 2019, around half of all overnight stays on the entire island.
