Schwerin (dpa/mv) – In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 97 children were adopted last year. As the country’s statistical office announced on Thursday, this is the highest level in the past 20 years. For example, only 67 adoption cases were recorded for 2020.
Most adopted children were adopted by a stepparent, which accounted for around two thirds (62.9 percent) of adoptions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. 34 percent were unrelated and 3.1 percent were related to the adoptive parent.
The proportion of infants and small children in particular has risen. Around 62.9 percent of the adoptees (61 children) had not yet reached the age of three. In 2020 there were 29 infants and toddlers. The number of older adopted children, on the other hand, has remained about the same.
