In January, the MV Werften Group had to file for bankruptcy after the cruise business and thus the construction of new ships collapsed due to the corona pandemic. Insolvency administrator Morgen has now done most of his job.
Rostock (dpa / mv) – Even after the sale of the Warnemünde shipyard to the federal government as the last of the three locations of the insolvent MV shipyard group, the work for insolvency administrator Christoph Morgen is not yet over. “The stressful work is done, my office will certainly be busy for another five years,” said Morgen of the German Press Agency. All financial circumstances and debts would have to be clarified. Each individual claim is checked in order to correctly distribute the money collected during the bankruptcy proceedings.
The MV shipyard group filed for bankruptcy in January. In addition to the shipyard in Rostock, the group also included the locations in Wismar and Stralsund as well as MV Werften Fertigmodule GmbH in Wismar and the Bremerhaven Lloyd shipyard.
Morgen had announced on Tuesday that the federal government had been awarded the contract for the Warnemünde shipyard. In the future, the naval arsenal will service and repair ships of the German Navy there. The site of the shipyard, the sale of which still has to be approved by the Bundestag, will now be completely cleared, Morgen said. This included more than 17,000 tons of steel already installed in the cruise ship “Global 2”.
The shipyard in Wismar has already been bought by submarine builder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) Kiel. According to Morgen, the cruise ship “Global Dream”, which is 75 percent complete, must be cleared from the dock by the end of 2023. The search for buyers for the finished construction of the ocean liner is difficult. “One thing is clear: ‘We’re not giving up,'” emphasized Morgen. But there are also ideas to park the ship elsewhere for a transitional period.
The Stralsund shipyard was sold to the city, which wants to develop a business park there. However, the lease did not develop as hoped, Morgen said. He assured the city and IG Metall that they would help in the search for possible uses. “But that’s no longer my actual job as an insolvency administrator.”
The group also included MV Werften Fertigmodule GmbH in Wismar, where cabins for cruise ships were built. The medical technology manufacturer Eppendorf took over this location. The Bremerhaven Lloyd shipyard had already been sold to the Rönner-Zech Group in March.
