Greifswald (dpa / mv) – The District Administrator of the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald, Michael Sack (CDU), has sharply condemned threats against the Mayor of Greifswald, Stefan Fassbinder (Greens). “What happened there cannot be excused at all,” said Sack on Tuesday in Greifswald. Fassbinder attended a meeting of the Ostseeviertel district representation on Monday evening. In front of the building, around 500 people had protested against a planned container accommodation for 500 refugees, and Fassbinder had to be protected by the police when he left.

According to preliminary information from the police, there were at least 20 people among the demonstrators against the accommodation in Greifswald who could be assigned to the right-wing extremist scene. At least 30 counter-demonstrators protesting against racism also gathered. The police are now investigating, among other things, resistance to law enforcement officers. The use of pyrotechnics and physical injury among demonstrators from different political camps are also being investigated.
