Rostock (dpa / mv) – The Greens in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania support plans to use part of the shipyard of the naval arsenal in Warnemünde for the construction of offshore platforms. The Federal Ministry of Defense must finally clear the way and work constructively on a solution together with the Belgian investor Smulders, said the party’s co-chairman, Ole Krüger, on Wednesday. “The area is large enough that both companies can be organized side by side and under the highest security requirements.”

The site of the Warnow shipyard in Warnemünde was taken over by the Naval Arsenal in August. In the future, naval ships will be serviced and repaired there. However, part of the area is not used for these tasks, which is why leasing is being considered. Smulders had already signaled interest weeks ago. “Industry, security and energy policies must not be viewed as opposites,” said Krüger.

However, the Federal Ministry of Defense is currently unable to make a “final decision”, as a spokesman emphasized when asked. He cannot anticipate the ongoing decision-making process.

IG Metall also hopes that the Belgian company will be successful. According to the union, around 500 collective bargaining jobs could be created at Smulders. Another 500 people could also find work in the supply chain. District manager Daniel Friedrich told the dpa at the beginning of the week that he would like more support from the federal government for such a future project.
