Krefeld (dpa / lnw) – The art museums in Krefeld will be dedicating an exhibition to sounds, noise and noise in art from Thursday. The show entitled “On Air” deals with the phase from the 1950s to the 1970s, in which new materials and things found their way into art, as the Kunstmuseen Krefeld announced. The exhibition runs until March 26, 2023.
The Krefeld art museums pointed out that from the 1950s onwards, substances and materials that were not common before were increasingly used in art. For example, they experimented with fat, charcoal and synthetic materials, but also with sounds, noises or simply silence. They worked with everyday background noise, machines, tools and also with electronically produced sounds such as radio and tape.
“Our collection contains some impressive sound objects by Yaacov Agam, Hermann Goepfert or by Yves Klein and Takis,” said museum director Katia Baudin. The French avant-garde artist Yves Klein composed, among other things, the “Monotone Symphony”, which consists of just one sound. Takis and Agam are above all representatives of kinetic art, in which the art object moves. Goepfert pursued the connection between art and architecture.
Around 50 objects, works on paper, installations, images, videos and performances are intended to show early sound art and its development from kinetic to conceptual art. The result is an “exciting audiovisual panorama of what is probably one of the most experimental phases in 20th century art,” emphasized Baudin.
