The shots at the rabbi’s house at the old synagogue in Essen shake. The North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament will deal with anti-Semitism on Wednesday, which must be decisively combated.
Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – The North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament is today dealing with the issue of anti-Semitism after shots were fired at an outbuilding of the old synagogue in Essen. It is a “political and societal task to ensure that Jews can live in Germany without fear,” stressed four factions in a joint motion. The government factions CDU and Greens as well as the opposition SPD and FDP had requested a current hour (10:00 a.m.) in which a decisive action against anti-Semitism should be the focus.
The public prosecutor’s office in Düsseldorf assumes that the shots fired last Friday night were “acts motivated by extremism and anti-Semitism”. In addition, damage was discovered on the metal roof of the new synagogue in Essen on Saturday, which is said to have occurred at least a month ago.
MEPs are also debating the pros and cons of the obligation to isolate people infected with the corona virus. After this obligation ceased to exist in several federal states, the FDP also called for its end in NRW.
