A female walrus is currently making headlines in Oslo and causing significant property damage. “Freya”, as it was called, weighs 600 to 700 kilograms and is actually just looking for a suitable place to lie in the sun for a bit.
It’s just annoying that the walrus chose the Oslofjord for this. For a week now, “Freya” has been climbing unsuspectingly onto small boats in the harbor, which collapse under their weight.
A bit of rest and relaxation is sorely needed. Before it appeared in Oslo, the walrus had already been sighted in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Scotland, far from its true home – the Arctic Circle. This is reported, among other things, by the “Spiegel”.
The Norwegians and many users on social media platforms have already taken Freya to their hearts. In different networks, photos and videos show “Freya” as she tries again and again and often unsuccessfully to climb into individual boats.
As cute and awkward as “Freya’s” hijacking may look, the Norwegian Fisheries Agency is urging all people to stay away from the walrus. It is not used to crowds, too many encounters are stressful. “Freya” has to relax for up to 20 hours, Rune Aae, a walrus expert, told the Norwegian news agency “NTB”.
In order to bring “Freya” back to its homeland, researchers have even built the animal its own platform on which it can relax. However, “Freya” has not yet accepted this. The scientists hope that this will change soon so that they can bring the walrus back to the Arctic Circle as quickly as possible.
