Leipzig/Offenbach (dpa/sn) – This year’s summer was the third sunniest since records began in Saxony. As the German Weather Service (DWD) reported in the provisional summer balance sheet on Tuesday, the sun shone for 790 hours in Saxony. It was only sunnier in the years 2003 and 2019.
The average temperature from June to August in the Free State was 19 degrees, close to the Germany-wide average of 19.2 degrees. In Saxony, the temperature was 2.5 degrees higher than the long-term mean of the reference period 1961 to 1990. The summer in Bavaria was also particularly dry. According to the DWD, 160 liters of rain per square meter fell in the summer months, almost 30 percent less than the average of 222 liters per square meter in the reference period.
Half of the summer rain fell in August, at almost 80 liters per square meter. The average temperature this month of 19.5 degrees was well below the Germany-wide value of 20.3 degrees. According to the DWD, the Free State was the second coolest and second rainiest federal state in August.
According to the information, there was around 145 liters per square meter nationwide this summer, almost 40 percent less precipitation than the average of the reference period 1961 to 1990 with 239 liters per square meter. In the time series of the DWD, which has existed since 1881, the summer was in sixth place. The summer of 1911 was the driest with only 124 liters.
