The contenders for the 2024 Oscars were revealed on Tuesday January 23, a few weeks before the ceremony which is scheduled to take place on March 10. If Oppenheimer leads with 13 nominations, Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet is in the running for five nominations including “best film” and “best director.” The film is also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Editing. Palme d’Or at Cannes, the French feature film was awarded two Golden Globes in early January.
The film was, however, not nominated in the “best international film” category: it was snubbed to represent France in favor of The Passion of Dodin Bouffant, a historical romance between two gastronomes – a choice which caused controversy.
The other big box office triumph of 2023, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, garnered eight nominations. Poor Creatures, by Yorgos Lanthimos, a feature film which depicts a female Frankenstein in the Victorian era, was nominated 11 times and Killers of the Flower Moon, a film by Martin Scorsese about the murders of Native Americans in early Oklahoma of the 20th century, in 10 categories.
