Americans are most likely to have to turn on subtitles for Tom Hardy’s (44) films. This was the result of a survey by the language learning platform “Preply”. The British actor tops the list of the most difficult stars to understand.
As his career progressed, Hardy’s performance became increasingly indistinct. His first major role was in Black Hawk Down. In the war film, however, he was heard very well. The 44-year-old shouted most of his sentences to a comrade who had lost his hearing after an explosion. Since then, the actor has become increasingly difficult to understand.
This is partly due to his own accent, but also to the accents that he adopts for his roles. He also disguises his voice in the film “The Revenant”, for which he was nominated for an Oscar. In “Dunkirk”, on the other hand, the star wears a mask in many scenes, which makes it impossible for him to express himself clearly. In “The Dark Knight Rises” all these points come together. That’s why this has been his most difficult role to understand so far.
But Tom Hardy isn’t the only star that Americans like to turn on subtitles for a better understanding. “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara (50) comes in second place. The Austrian Arnold Schwarzenegger (74) follows the Colombian. The Brit Sean Connery (1939-2020) took fourth place, closely followed by Johnny Depp (59). Although the actor hails from Kentucky in the USA, Americans have trouble understanding him due to his mumbling way of speaking.
Aside from the actors, whole series are not easy to understand either. These include “Peaky Blinders”, “Derry Girl”, “Game of Thrones”, “Outlander” and “Downtown Abbey”. With the exception of the US fantasy series “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander”, all selected productions are from the United Kingdom.
